The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office announced plans to expand its Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera program during a presentation to the Board of Supervisors on October 22. The proposal includes the installation of approximately 60 new ALPR cameras in unincorporated areas, targeting key communities such as Alpine, Borrego Springs, Campo, and Fallbrook, among others.
This initiative is part of the Sheriff’s commitment to enhance public safety using advanced technology. Throughout the summer, the Sheriff’s Office conducted 30 community outreach events to gather feedback from residents in areas slated for the new cameras. The public also had an opportunity to ask questions during the Board meeting.
ALPR cameras are crucial for locating missing persons, investigating serious crimes, and enhancing community safety. By capturing color images of license plates and comparing them against law enforcement databases, these cameras help identify stolen vehicles and assist with criminal investigations. The Sheriff’s Office has successfully deployed ALPR technology in five contract cities, leading to significant investigative breakthroughs in cases like homicides and kidnappings.
