SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Todd Gloria took an early lead in the race for San Diego mayor, according to unofficial returns released by the the county Registrar of Voters just after polls closed Tuesday.
The runoff between the two mayoral candidates was set after a crowded primary election back in March , where Gloria was able to coast to a first place finish with about half of the vote. Turner, a political newcomer and self-described Independent, edged out the other challengers with 23%.
Since then, the race has proven to be one of the most competitive in the county, with a significant amount of cash flowing into committees created both in support of and against Gloria’s re-election bid.
