One person dead in Miramar crash

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — One person was killed in crash that knocked down a traffic light post Monday in Miramar, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m. in the area of the State Route 163 exit to Kearny Villa Road, according to the San Diego Police Department.

According to SDPD, the collision occurred between a Toyota Highlander and a Ford F-450 flatbed truck, when the SUV attempted to turn left onto Kearny Villa Road from the off-ramp.

The Highlander had been stopped at a red light and entered the intersection when it flipped green, intending to head northbound on Kearny Villa Road. The truck had been traveling southbound, aiming to turn onto SR-163.

According to SDPD, the Ford failed to stop its red light as the Highlander made its protected turn. The Ford then broadsided the SUV and impacted the traffic light post, SDPD said.

The driver of the truck, identified as a 49-year-old woman, sustained major injuries in the collision and was taken to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Highlander, described as a 66-year-old woman, was uninjured.
