Students given free bikes and helmets as part of safety surprise from police

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Some students at Horton Elementary school were given free bikes Wednesday. It was all part of a holiday event put on by the San Diego Unified Police Department.

Nearly 20 third through fifth grade students thought they were meeting with their “buddy” police officer as they often do as part of the district’s True Blue Buddies Program, but these mentor officers had much more in mind for their students.

A lesson bike safety turned out to be a giveaway. Every student in the auditorium was given a brand new bike and helmet. It’s something they were not expecting. Even Santa Clause showed up for the event.

“I really appreciate it, I’m happy,” said one student after the surprise was revealed.

With the holiday about a week away, Christmas came early for these San Diego students.
