SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Among the new California laws taking effect on Jan. 1, 2025 is a bill legalizing cannabis businesses to sell food and non-alcoholic drinks as well as host live performances.
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1775 into law on Sep. 30, amending an existing portion of the Business and Professions Code to allow the sale of prepackaged, non-cannabis-infused food and non-alcoholic beverages in businesses that sell cannabis.

The bill also allows those businesses to sell tickets for live concerts or other performances that would take place in areas where the consumption of cannabis is allowed.
However, the sale or consumption of alcohol or tobacco is still not allowed on the premises, and access to the “cafes” or “lounges” is strictly prohibited to those 21 and over.
National City was one of the first cities in the state to permit one such business with the introduction of Sessions by the Bay , which will occupy a 16,000-square-foot space located at 700 Bay Marina Dr.
