Christmas Eve weather in San Diego: Light rain, big waves and dense fog

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Fog along San Diego’s coastal areas has been a huge problem with holiday travel the last few days and could delay some more flights as Christmas gets closer.

Fog is lifting for most areas with the exception of La Jolla early Monday afternoon, but dense fog is expected to return and spread just west of the Interstate 15 late tonight into Tuesday morning. This will likely impact operations at San Diego International Airport.

The other coastal alert San Diegans will notice are the big waves at the beach that have prompted a High Surf Advisory until Wednesday morning. Six to 10 foot breaking waves are possible with sets of up to 13 feet.

These will be double — if not triple — overhead as a northwest swell pushes through.

High clouds are expected to pass overhead Monday and Tuesday with a deepening marine layer into Christmas Eve. An approaching area of low pressure will move across the West Coast, ramping up winds and bringing a chance of scattered light showers.
