The historic birthplace of San Diego in the 1820s was recognized just before Christmas with a new gateway sign and official recognition of community leader Diane Powers.
The Old Town San Diego Chamber of Commerce, the Historic Old Town Community Foundation, community leaders, local businesses, and public officials dedicated the sign on Dec. 19.
The new landmark, located at 2540 San Diego Avenue, welcomes visitors to Old Town State Historic Park and the surrounding cultural attractions and businesses.
“It represents years of collaboration and dedication, serving as both a tribute to Old Town’s heritage and an invitation for visitors to explore its unique charm,” said Mayor Todd Gloria.
During the dedication, San Diego Avenue was renamed Diane Powers Way.
Powers is known as the “mother of modern Old Town” for founding Bazaar Del Mundo and becoming one of the historic neighborhood’s most beloved advocates.
