SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Old Town San Diego is heading into the new year with a brand new decoration: Its very own gateway sign.
City officials and the Old Town San Diego Chamber of Commerce celebrated the ribbon cutting for the long-discussed landmark in mid-December, officially adding the historic neighborhood to a growing list with its own welcome sign.
“We have iconic signs that have been around for over a hundred years,” said Mayor Todd Gloria during the Dec. 19 ribbon cutting ceremony. “Today, a historic day that this is, we’re adding another sign to that collection with this Old Town sign.”

“It is proof that even in difficult times, even in times of austerity, we can still do big things together,” he continued.
Gateway signs have long been a unique part of San Diego’s identity, with more than a dozen erected in neighborhoods throughout the county. The signs have become a way to signify the unique character of a neighborhood while paying tribute to the region’s history.
