‘Bird Rock Bandit’ convicted of murder up for parole

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Nearly two decades after being convicted of murder in the death of a professional surfer, one of the people a part of the infamous “Bird Rock Bandits” is now eligible for parole.

Seth Cravens, alongside his buddies, attacked the 24-year-old Emery Kauanui back in May 23, 2007 outside his mother’s home following a verbal altercation at a local bar. Cravens threw a punch to his head that knocked him out.

Kauanui died at the hospital five days later due to blunt force trauma from that fateful blow.

Later this week, Cravens, now in his late 30s, will have a hearing on whether a parole board should grant him a second chance — something District Attorney Summer Stephan is fighting.
