California Rain Could Bring New Dangers From Wildfires

Parts of Southern California may be in with a chance of rain this weekend, forecasts suggest, but Los Angeles officials have warned that precipitation could sweep fire-related toxins into the state’s waterways.

Why It Matters

The region is still dealing with wildfires and the rain—which theoretically should help with putting fires out—brings with it the additional risk of putting toxins into the water supply.

The fires raging in California this month have already resulted in the widespread destruction of homes. Air quality is also a growing concern for residents as the containment of the fires continues.

At least 28 people have died, according to ABC News.

What to Know

The National Weather Service (NWS) said confidence is increasing that there will be rainfall in parts of Southern California, potentially providing some much-needed moisture in fire-parched areas.
