Man accused in Ventura steakhouse killing moved out of jail

A man charged with a fatal stabbing at a Ventura steakhouse almost seven years ago has been ordered out of jail and into a local psychiatric hospital following a state appeals court ruling that a San Diego prisoner could not be forced to wait in jail indefinitely for a bed in an authorized treatment facility.

The Ventura County Superior Court ordered defendant Jamal Jackson to Ventura’s Hillmont Psychiatric Center on Jan. 16, a month after the 4th District Court of Appeal ruled in the San Diego prisoner’s favor.

Hillmont is a locked, acute-care psychiatric hospital with approximately 40 beds at Ventura County Medical Center. It is designed for short stays, not long-term care, but Jackson has been ordered to remain there until another facility can be found. A court hearing on the transfer is scheduled Thursday…
