The controversy behind California’s swastika-shaped building complex

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A naval base in San Diego County has generated controversy for several decades for its exterior design — especially when viewed from above.

Longtime San Diegans may already be familiar with the controversy surrounding the buildings on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, which appear as four “L”s that together can resemble the shape of a swastika, a symbol associated with the Nazi Party.

The four buildings are barracks which are located between Bougainville, Eniwetok, Tulagi and Rio roads on the base.

The base was established in 1943 after the dredging of San Diego Bay, which was done to allow large vessels to steam into Naval Station San Diego during World War II, according to the Navy’s website …
