SAN DIEGO, CA — In a stunning 48-hour operation, California border agents at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry pulled off one of the biggest cocaine busts of 2025, intercepting eight separate smuggling attempts and preventing hundreds of pounds of drugs from hitting American streets.
Secret Compartments and K-9 Heroes
The drama began on Tuesday afternoon when sharp-eyed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers spotted something fishy about an empty commercial truck. Their trained K-9 units quickly zeroed in on hidden compartments cleverly built into the cabin floors. This would become a pattern over the next two days, as driver after driver fell into the CBP’s net.
Tuesday’s Triple Take-Down
The first day’s operation netted three separate busts within just over an hour. The initial seizure caught a 31-year-old driver with nearly 47 pounds of cocaine. Before agents could even process that haul, a second truck rolled up carrying 61 pounds of the drug. Ten minutes later, a third vehicle yielded the day’s biggest catch: 63 pounds of cocaine.
Wednesday’s Wild Ride
Not to be outdone, Wednesday brought even more action. In a two-hour window, officers intercepted five more trucks, each hiding cocaine in similar floor compartments. The seized amounts ranged from 15 to 31 pounds, bringing the two-day total to more than 240 pounds of cocaine.
High-Tech Tactics Pay Off
CBP officers employed an arsenal of tools in their successful operation, including non-intrusive imaging technology and their skilled K-9 units. Each driver held valid border crossing documentation, suggesting an increasingly sophisticated smuggling operation.
Eight Arrests, Eight Seized Trucks
All eight drivers have been transferred to Homeland Security Investigations for further processing. Their trucks were impounded by CBP. As with all criminal cases in the United States, the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The Battle Continues
The Otay Mesa Port of Entry remains a crucial battleground in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking. Port Director Rosa E. Hernandez praised her officers’ exceptional work in preventing these narcotics from reaching American communities. CBP continues to enhance its enforcement strategies to stay ahead of evolving smuggling tactics…
