Digital-only coupons help shoppers save hundreds; A California city becomes the first to ban them

In a groundbreaking move, the San Diego City Council has passed a first-in-the-nation Grocery Pricing Transparency Ordinance. Unanimously approved on Monday, the policy mandates that local grocery stores offering digital-only coupons must also provide paper coupons for in-store customers. This ensures equal access to savings for all San Diegans, regardless of smartphone or internet access.

AARP California praised the ordinance, highlighting its importance for older adults and vulnerable populations. “This measure removes barriers, helping people on fixed incomes save on groceries,” the group stated.

However, some local grocers argue the policy lacks clarity and may create unintended challenges for businesses.
