As tariffs begin, San Diego faces rising prices and economic uncertainty

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Sweeping new import tariffs on about 60 countries and territories went into effect at midnight eastern time Wednesday creating uncertainty about how much exactly prices could go up on everyday goods.

Universal tariffs of 10% are already in effect, and China faces the steepest levy.

“Another 50% tariff on top of the 34% on top of the 20%, which comes out to 104% which is ridiculous,” said Nicholas Tran, co-owner of Vien Dong 4 Supermarket and World Foods Supermarket in City Heights.

From canned goods to frozen seafood, nearly everything inside the store is from Asia. Tran said his customers are bracing for tariffs: “I’ve seen my business go up 20% because people are buying what they normally don’t buy in bulk,” he explained…
