Shark encounter confirmed in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A group of four surfers encountered a shark while in the waters along Carlsbad State Beach Friday morning. The sighting has been confirmed by city officials.

According to Carlsbad lifeguards, the surfers said the shark was spotted off the coast of Tower 37 around 10 a.m. This area is located south of Pine Avenue. The surfers had an interaction with the shark, reporting it to be between 7 and 10 feet long.

Both state and city lifeguards are teaming up to place signs along the beach to notify the public of the shark sighting, also encouraging swimmers to stay out of the water. Theses signs, put up as a precaution, will be visible for a mile in each direction. The advisory will remain in effect for 24 hours.
