The San Diego community is mourning the loss of a prominent leader, Chairman Bo Mazzetti of the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians, who passed away at 77 due to cancer. As confirmed in a statement by the Rincon officials, Mazzetti was comforted by his family in his final moments. Throughout his life, Mazzetti was deeply invested in improving the lives not only of his tribe but also the broader San Diego County through various roles, including his tenure as the Chairman since 2007. Following his father’s legacy, Mazzetti was elected as tribal chairman and held the position for 16 years. His impact extended to various community posts and founding roles, such as the Southern California Tribal Chairman’s Association. After serving in the Vietnam War, Mazzetti continued to pursue education and graduated from California Polytechnic University. His subsequent career included pivotal work as the San Diego County Indian Affairs officer and the president of the San Luis Rey Indian Water Authority, where he was instrumental in a 50-year legal battle to regain tribal water rights.
