Grandmother blinded during La Mesa riots reflects on incident 5 years later

LA MESA, Calif. — Five years after the La Mesa riots, a grandmother who was blinded when hit by a police bean bag round is speaking out about her experience and the lasting impact of that night.

Leslie Furcron, 64, was live-streaming the protest on Facebook on May 30, 2020, when she was struck between the eyes by a bean bag round fired by a La Mesa police officer.

“I was running my mouth. I remember calling them, you know, murderers,” Furcron told CBS 8 in a recent interview from Atlanta. “I had no harm or ill intent towards anyone or anything that was not an aim in any of this.”…
