SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego trash fee is nearly here and according to the city, 226,500 customer households will be paying as much as $43.60 for a 95-gallon trash can. Voters narrowly passed the fee when they believed it was going to be half the cost and it’s been a fight ever since.
“It’s disguised under a fee, but it’s really a tax,” said Lenard Fallorina, a former San Diego city employee from the environmental services. “A lot of people who are on fixed incomes can’t afford it and I don’t think its right.”
Fallorina says the way this trash fee is being charged scares him, pointing out that it’s the only service fee which is attached to homeowners’ property taxes.

“As far a water bill, they’ll shut off your water. As far as your electric bill, they’ll shut off your electric bill. As far as trash, they can take your house,” said Fallorina…
