State Route 52 roller coaster getting smoothed out as part of pavement project

If you’ve lived in San Diego for even a short period, then you’re probably familiar with the dips and bumps on State Route 52. This decade-old problem makes for a dangerous and uncomfortable ride between Interstate 805 and State Route 163, but the days of the dips may be coming to an end.

SR-52 is built on top of the Miramar Landfill. When the ground underneath shifts, the freeway sinks in various places, creating undulations. Every 2-3 years, Caltrans would repave it to try to solve the problem.

“They’ll pave it, it will get flat, then after time it will get worse, and they’ll pave it again, it just keeps going back and forth,” said San Diego Resident Bill Feldman…
