Great white shark sighting sparks curiosity among San Diego-area beachgoers

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A San Diego fisherman’s close encounter with a great white shark is making waves ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday, raising both excitement and curiosity along San Diego’s coastline.

Dustin Sergent captured video of what he estimates to be a 16- to 18-foot great white shark while fishing about three miles off the coast of La Jolla on June 28. The footage has since gone viral, garnering thousands of views and sparking chatter at local beaches.

“It’s a little freaky at first, but honestly their demeanor kind of puts you at rest pretty fast,” Sergent said. “There was no threat — it was really cool.”

Sergent said the shark calmly circled his 18-foot boat several times, appearing more curious than aggressive. At one point, a sea lion approached and even seemed to dominate the interaction…
