Construction slated to begin on new pirate playground at South Bay’s Pepper Park

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Ahoy, matey. Construction will soon be underway on a new pirate-themed playground that will be replacing the existing playground at Pepper Park in San Diego’s South Bay.

Construction on the new playground area is slated to begin July 23, 2025, when many South Bay kids go back to school, according to the Port of San Diego. A fence will be placed around the construction area through early 2026 as crews install the new pirate-themed play structure.

The 5.2-acre park on Tidelands Avenue in National City adjoins the Sweetwater Channel.

Areas of the park that are not under construction will remain open to the public and the boat ramp will remain open throughout the entire construction process, the Port said. Signs will be placed around the park to alert the public of the construction schedule and any upcoming closures…
