VIDEO: Private boat crashes into USS Midway; captain arrested for hit-and-run

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego Harbor Police have confirmed that a private pleasure craft collided with the USS Midway Museum ship Friday afternoon, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage to the historic vessel.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. on July 18 near the Embarcadero. According to authorities, the boat struck the hull of the USS Midway, denting the side of the decommissioned aircraft carrier, which now serves as a museum and popular tourist destination.

San Diego Web Cam, which offers live streaming webcam views of downtown San Diego and the bay from multiple cameras, captured the moment the collision occurred, as seen below.

Harbor Police say the captain of the private vessel fled the scene but was later located and arrested. He is facing charges of hit-and-run and is also suspected of operating a boat under the influence.

No injuries were reported, and the USS Midway remained open to the public following the incident…
