San Diego considers charging for parking at Balboa Park

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Visitors to Balboa Park may soon have to pay for something that’s always been free, parking.

After years of debate, city leaders are advancing a plan that would charge between $5 and $15 a day for parking at the city’s most iconic destination. The system could be implemented as early as this fall.

‘A terrible thing to do’

Fred Kormanik, a longtime San Diego resident, said he’s been visiting the San Diego Zoo for more than 30 years and always appreciated the free parking.

“We usually have a pass to the zoo because we’ve lived here over 30 years,” Kormanik said.“What made the membership attractive is the free parking here and at the Wild Animal Park. Charging for parking? I don’t think that’s right. I think it’s a terrible thing to do. They’re going to lose business.”…
