California invests $35 Million cannabis tax revenue to boost DUI prevention and road safety

San Diego, California – The San Diego Police Department will receive $428,000 in new funding to combat impaired driving, part of a larger $35 million state initiative made possible by cannabis tax revenue. Announced Tuesday, the grant will fund DUI saturation patrols, impaired-driving detection equipment, and public outreach efforts through June 2026.

The funding comes from the California Highway Patrol’s Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program, an initiative born out of Proposition 64—the 2016 ballot measure that legalized and taxed adult-use marijuana across the state. Since then, millions in cannabis-generated revenue have flowed into public health, education, and safety programs, including local law enforcement efforts to address driving under the influence of cannabis and other substances.

SDPD Sgt. Gregory Minter said the department aims to use the money for a “well-rounded approach to traffic safety,” including enforcement, training, and education. “We can better protect our roadways and reduce the threat posed by impaired drivers,” Minter said…
