San Diego loses appeal in Scripps patient-dumping case

SAN DIEGO — The California Court of Appeals declined to overturn a decision by the San Diego County Superior Court in a dispute between the City of San Diego and Scripps Health regarding the discharge of a psychiatric patient.

According to court records, the case involved a severely mentally ill patient referred to as J.N.. The man had a documented history of mental illness, including schizophrenia, depression, and multiple suicide attempts.

In September 2019, a city investigator found J.N. in an independent living facility and arranged for him to be admitted to the Behavioral Health Unit at Scripps Mercy Hospital…
