Cyclist identified in fatal Lake Murray bike path crash, safety concerns raised

SAN DIEGO — Investigators are sharing new information about the tragic head-on bicycle collision that happened last Friday morning on the Lake Murray Bike Path, leaving one man dead and another injured.

According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, 68-year-old David Engler of El Cajon was the cyclist who died in the crash. First responders arrived after a 911 call at 7:25 a.m., but despite lifesaving efforts, Engler was pronounced dead at the scene 15 minutes later. The cause of death was blunt force injuries, and authorities confirmed that Engler was not wearing a helmet.

San Diego Police say the other rider, a man in his 70s, survived with non-life-threatening injuries, and was taken to a local hospital. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the department’s Traffic Division…
