Residents ask for help cleaning up illegal dumping site near SR-905 in San Ysidro

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — In September, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the Clean California initiative picked up more than 136,000 garbage trucks worth of trash along California highways over the last four years, but there’s still more to do.

Over the summer, Mayor Todd Gloria announced an agreement with Caltrans to allow city workers to clear illegal dumping sites and encampments across a five-mile stretch of highway in the city of San Diego, but that agreement didn’t include parts of the highway in San Ysidro, and residents there say trash has piled up since the pandemic along State Route 905.
