New proposal aims to cap rental fees in San Diego at 5% of rent

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Belt tightening has been the name of the game for the last few years and renters have felt it more than most. Now, the San Diego City Council is proposing a new plan to regulate extra fees which landlords sometimes charge that add to the cost of living.

“These quote-on-quote junk fees can add hundreds of dollars to a families housing cost, that are often unexpected and very unclear,” said Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera (District 9).

Elo-Rivera listed off a variety of junk fees like convenience charges, excessive screening fees, pet fees and the trash fee. For the first time in history, the City of San Diego will start charging homeowners for those trash fees, beginning on the next tax bill.
