ALPR System Aids Conviction in Felony Assault of Unhoused Man

SAN DIEGO, CA – A man has been convicted and sentenced to six years in prison for a felony assault that resulted in great bodily injury. The sentencing took place on September 29, 2025, nearly a year after the incident occurred.

The assault involved a 64-year-old unhoused man who was standing on a center median seeking donations at the time of the attack. According to the investigation, the driver of a vehicle approached the victim, reached out and grabbed his hair, and then dragged him alongside the vehicle. The driver subsequently ran over the victim, resulting in a broken leg.

Investigators were able to quickly identify the vehicle and the suspect with the assistance of the department’s Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) System. This technology was credited by authorities for aiding in the swift resolution of the case…
