San Diego to name street after civil rights leader Julia Legaspi

(FOX 5/KUSI) — A street in Mira Mesa was renamed in honor of a late neighborhood resident and civil rights icon on Wednesday.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, Assemblymember Chris Ward, Council President Pro Tem Kent Lee and other community leaders gathered in Mira Mesa to celebrate the renaming of a street in honor of Julia Legaspi, the first transgender person appointed to public office in San Diego.

City and community leaders unveiled the honorary street sign, “Julia Legaspi Way,” in the 9000 block of Penticton Way.

Legaspi immigrated to the U.S. from Cavite City in the Philippines in 1980. She opened Jhigs’ Hair Studio two years later, which became a gathering place for members of the Filipino and Asian American communities for 40 years…
