San Diego Humane Society sees increase in ‘highly desirable’ dog breeds

(FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diegans who are looking to welcome a new four-legged friend into their home but have a specific breed in mind might be in luck. The San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) said it saw an increase in dog breeds that are considered “highly desirable” throughout the past year.

SDHS said in 2025, it saw a notable increase in popular dog breeds such as French bulldogs, pugs, maltipoos and more. Specifically, the organization welcomed in 381 Frenchies, 287 pugs, 161 maltese, 158 maltipoos and 120 shih tzus.

Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of SDHS, said the humane society understands that people who are looking for a new dog may have specific preferences.

“Our data shows you can find any breed at any age in a shelter or rescue, which makes adoption the best option for bringing home a pet,” said Dr. Weitzman.
