Cops clear firearms off streets

Nearly 140 unwanted firearms were turned in by residents at a South Bay gun safety event on Dec. 13, reflecting strong community participation in efforts to keep local streets safe.

The event, held at the South Bay Superior Court, 500 Third Ave., was hosted by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the District Attorney’s Office, Chula Vista Police Department, National City Police Department, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Division of Adult Parole Operations.

A total of 138 firearms were surrendered, including handguns, rifles, shotguns, and assault weapons. Participants received $100 gift cards for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and $200 for assault weapons.
