SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Several residents were displaced after a staircase collapsed inside a three-story apartment complex in San Diego’s Mid-City neighborhood on Christmas Eve.
San Diego Fire-Rescue officials say crews were called to an apartment building along 44th Street after receiving reports that stairs connecting the third and second floors had collapsed. The failure caused significant damage to the second-floor staircase leading down to the first floor, leaving it unsafe and impassable.
The apartment complex has three stories with an estimated 10 to 12 units on each floor. Officials expressed concerns that some end units may no longer be safe for people to live in due to the damage.
