Paid parking takes effect at Balboa Park, leaving lots empty on first weekend

SAN DIEGO — Paid parking made its debut at Balboa Park for its first weekend, and visitors immediately noticed a difference. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, typically one of the park’s busiest times, drivers encountered an unexpected sight: rows of open parking spaces.

Michael was among the few who parked near the San Diego Air & Space Museum, paying $10 for four hours as a non–San Diego resident.

“I did the little kiosk, I just had to use my credit card and a phone number, so that was easy,” he said…
