San Diego gunman sentenced to 24 years for paralyzing teen cheerleader during gang shootout

SAN DIEGO — A man who opened fire outside a party in the Talmadge neighborhood and shot a 17-year-old bystander who ended up paralyzed was sentenced Thursday to 24 years in state prison.

But as Juan Diaz Velazco was escorted out of the courtroom Thursday, he mumbled nine words that the victim, Brianna Wallace says felt like a final insult: “I’m sorry for whatever I did to that girl.”
