(FOX 5/KUSI) — A viral cellphone video showing a San Diego police officer repeatedly punching a suspect has sparked widespread controversy — and a public rift between SDPD Chief Scott Wahl and the city’s police union.
The recording, captured Saturday, Jan. 10, at 38th Street and National Avenue, shows officers arresting a man witnesses say was involved in a domestic violence incident during which he allegedly used a tool to break a car window. As officers took him into custody, one officer is seen punching the suspect in the head, causing him to fall, before striking him several more times in the head.

Longtime San Diego criminal defense attorney Gretchen Von Helms said the video raises serious concerns.
“The suspect appeared from the video to be complying with the rules,” she said. “He got down on his knees, he put his hands up behind his head, and it looked like the officer punches him in the face. That’s what makes the suspect fall over, and then the officer starts punching him again several times in the head. That was very disturbing to see.”…
