Ocean Beach icon ‘The Black’ announces closure after nearly 60 years

SAN DIEGO — The Black, a cornerstone of Ocean Beach retail since opening in the 1960s, will close its doors after nearly six decades of serving the community.

The store opened 57 years ago on Newport Avenue in the heart of Ocean Beach as a smoke shop. Over the decades, it evolved into a comprehensive retailer offering incense, records, comic books, clothing and specialty items while maintaining its distinctive hippy aesthetic.
