San Diego State University working to recover millions it wired in fraudulent scheme

SAN DIEGO — San Diego State University is working with the FBI to recover more than $5.4 million it lost in a “fraudulent scheme” in September 2025.

According to documents obtained by CBS 8, San Diego State officials deposited a total of $5.9 million into a Citibank account held in the name of Renstev, LLC on Sept. 29, 2025. The account and the business, according to the FBI, were all a ruse, established as part of a financial scheme.

“This transfer was made after [San Diego State University] was targeted by a fraudulent scheme by one or more perpetrators, later identified and investigated by the FBI,” reads the federal documents…
