San Diego Wants to Lower Speed Limits in School Zones, High-risk Corridors

San Diego released a Comprehensive Speed Management Plan aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and eliminating traffic deaths.

According to an article from City News Service, the plan uses a “data-driven, city-wide approach to lower speed limits across San Diego’s neighborhoods, commercial corridors, and school zones.” It is funded by a 2022 federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant.

New California state laws give cities more leeway in reducing speed limits, particularly on dangerous corridors and in high-risk areas like school zones. “With these new permissions from the state, the city found more than 20% of its roads — 679.1 miles — are candidates for slower speeds.”…
