SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The U.S. Navy christened its newest ship Saturday at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, honoring a Marine Corps hero whose actions during the Korean War earned him the nation’s highest military award.
The vessel, the USNS Hector A. Cafferata Jr. (T-ESB-8), is the sixth and final ship in the Navy’s Expeditionary Sea Base program. The ship is named after Hector A. Cafferata Jr., a Medal of Honor recipient who displayed extraordinary bravery during the Korean War.
