Painted Lady butterflies swarm San Diego beaches earlier than usual, delighting residents

SAN DIEGO — A kaleidoscope of Painted Lady butterflies swept across San Diego County this weekend, swarming beaches from Carlsbad to Pacific Beach and beyond, drawing gasps from beachgoers who could hardly believe what they were seeing.

Marissa McLaughlin was sitting in her beach chair at Carlsbad Beach near Beech Street on Sunday when the swarm descended on her and her family.
