SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Two Marines near Camp Pendleton sprang into action in January, when a routine drive around base turned into an unexpected rescue effort involving a family of four.
According to a press release from the United States Marine Corps, Cpl. Malakai Obed and Cpl. Caden Perez were driving toward the main gate of Camp Pendleton on Vandergrift Road on Jan. 15, when they saw a serious vehicle crash take place right in front of them.
“Perez was riding next to me, and I heard him say, ‘Oh no,’” Cpl. Obed said. “When I looked up, I saw the car go off the side of the road and into a ditch.”
According to information gathered at the scene, a trailer hitch from a truck driving ahead of the vehicle broke loose and fell backward. The metal hitch crashed through the vehicle’s windshield and struck the woman driving in the head…
