SANTEE (CNS) – A bicyclist dropped off a camouflage backpack full of high-powered ammunition in front of the Santee Sheriff’s Station today, prompting an evacuation of the facility and closures of nearby traffic lanes until a bomb squad eliminated the hazard.
The man — who apparently was trying to turn over the munitions to law enforcement for disposal — arrived at the station in the 8800 block of Cuyamaca Street shortly before 12:30 p.m., placed the bag near the front door and then rode off the south, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
“Due to the suspicious nature of the incident, deputies immediately secured the area and requested assistance from sheriff’s bomb/arson detectives,” Sgt. Steve Chambers said. ‘Patrol deputies conducted a search of the surrounding area for the (bicyclist) while the sheriff’s helicopter issued public-address announcements with a description of (him).”…
