Space debris warning issued to ships off coast of San Diego as a precaution

SAN DIEGO — A warning was issued for ships off the coast of San Diego as the Artemis II capsule prepares for splashdown.

The U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s Maritime Safety Information site is warning mariners to avoid a temporary hazard zone during reentry operations.

The warning applies to ships operating 60 to 70 miles offshore and covers a timeframe between 4:43 p.m. and 6:25 p.m., coinciding with the expected splashdown window. The hazard zone extends across areas off Oceanside, La Jolla and Point Loma, according to coordinates provided by the Maritime Safety Information site.
