Jury screening begins in Larry Millete murder trial

SAN DIEGO — Jury screening began Monday for one of the most high-profile murder cases San Diego has seen in a long time.

Larry Millete, who’s charged with his wife Maya Millete’s murder, is scheduled to go to trial May 11. However, because jury selection is expected to be extensive, the screening process began three weeks early. According to the court, 87 potential jurors showed up Monday to fill out jury questionnaires.

“Although it’s a cumbersome process, it does kind of fast forward [it], because the jurors answer these questions. They’re pretty extensive. Takes a long time to answer them, and then the attorneys can go through them and then make their challenges, or they know who they’re going to challenge advance,” said Jan Ronis, a criminal defense attorney with more than five decades of experience.
