California ranks first in dog attacks on mail carriers. Two Bay Area cities made the list

California mail carriers were attacked by dogs more than 600 times last year — more than in any other state, the U.S. Postal Service announced.

San Francisco and Oakland both ranked in the top 33 affected cities, the Postal Service said, with 16 incidents in San Francisco and 27 in Oakland in 2025. Other California cities were higher on the list of offenders: San Diego came in eighth, while Los Angeles topped the nationwide list with 70 attacks.

Dogs can act unpredictably when they’re startled by mail carriers or when they feel called to protect their territory, the Postal Service said. But when dogs attack postal workers, their owners can be on the hook for thousands of dollars to cover the costs of their medical care, damaged clothing, lost shifts and emotional distress…
