For weeks, a mysterious, star-studded video shoot taking place across San Francisco has sparked questions: Why are local legends Francis Ford Coppola, Dave Eggers, and Chris Columbus gathered outside Cafe Zoetrope on a Tuesday afternoon? What can be gleaned from the shoot’s code name, “City of Wild?” And why exactly is a coyote getting back scratches in Dolores Park?
The mystery ends Wednesday morning with the release of “Comeback City,” a two-and-a-half-minute hype video and “love letter” to the city, sponsored by a nonprofit connected to a political group supporting Mayor Daniel Lurie.
The video — directed by Joe Talbot, who helmed the 2019 Sundance hit “Last Black Man in San Francisco” — features a who’s who of figures associated with the city, including Coppola, Eggers, Columbus, Stephen Curry, Joe Montana, rapper Larry June, former Mayor Willie Brown, chef Dominique Crenn, Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton, and the current mayor himself.
