Can a beloved Bay Area taproom lure locals to a notorious tourist trap?

A new taproom from Woods Beer & Wine Co., a longtime Bay Area craft brewery that’s expanded rapidly in recent years, is opening at Fisherman’s Wharf, the tourist-laden, century-old waterfront that is undergoing a makeover to make it more appealing to locals.

The taproom is slated to open in late summer in the space formerly occupied by the historic Fishermen’s Grotto No. 9, at 2847 Taylor St. The Grotto, a nearly century-old nautical-themed restaurant, was evicted by the Port of San Francisco over $332,642 in back rent; the location sat empty until now.

CEO Jim Woods said the Fisherman’s Wharf menu is still in development. “I think each neighborhood has a need for something different,” he said. “I think that the food should reflect that.”…
