Bay Area specialty grocery chain Mollie Stone’s Markets is acquiring another local grocer: Marin County’s 70-year-old United Markets, which has two stores in San Rafael and San Anselmo. Mollie Stone’s and United Markets announced the news in the Shelby Report on Monday.
United Markets owner Kelly Smith told SFGATE that the business has been in her family since 1982. She took over in 2019, after her father Bill Daniels died.
“It just felt like it was time,” she said. “So we talked to Mollie Stone’s. They’re a union shop, as we are, so I know that my employees will be taken care of by them, and they’re locally owned. So, it just made sense that we’re very similar on how we do things, how we go to market and how we take care of our community.”…
